Post How safe is it...

My husband really wants to breed my horse to a cream draft. She is 15.1hh but built very stout.(wide) Just how safe would it be for her to carry & deliver if she were bred to a draft???

How old is the horse?

Most of what I've heard, the foal will grow to the size alloted in the womb. But I've heard otherwise.

It would be best to breed to a similar size horse or smaller.

Has she ever foaled before? If not, then I'd say no. If she has, then it's a decision I would make with my vet.

not a good idea.. i'm not saying don't do it, but it is usually a good idea to have a larger mare and smaller stud. check with your vet.

I have seen draft horses crossed successfully with stock horses, AI is the way to go The mare's uterus will only allow the foal to grow as big as it is safe to for the health of the mare. There was a study done where researchers bred large stallions to shetland pony mares, through AI and teh uterus of teh shettie only allowed the foal to get so big in utero. I read this years ago adn can't remember where the article is, I will look for it through my stacks of mags

I read that also.

But when that foal hits the ground, genetics will take over and will pull a lot of nutrition from that mare. SO be ready if you breed her bigger.
