In saddle or on the ground?

In saddle, ask for shoulder movement to turn on haunches.

Ask for hip movement for forehand turns.

On the ground, similar. I walk INTO the head and away from the head for turns on the haunches.

For turns on the forehand. I use my arm to ask for the haunches. I stick it out and flip my hand on trained ones. To train for it, I use my fingers and tap the haunches "over".

Basically, it's just pressure and release. Ask the front end to move over by putting pressure on or near the girth area, when you get a step, release. If the horse moves forward, back him up, if he backs up, keep putting pressure on until he crosses his front over.

Same idea with the back end, put pressure about where the back cinch would be, back him up if he moves forward, tip his head towards you if he moves sideways or forward. Release the pressure when he yields his hind end.

I don't know if this is the "proper" way to ask for a turn on the forehand but...it seems to work. I take (for example) my right leg back behind the girth and nudge, several times if necessary. At the same time I squeeze and release my right rein but keep some tension in the left rein to keep her from just turning her head. Nudge, nudge, nudge, when she does it right I praise her. We've never gotten a full 360 turn but we're working on it.
