    Hannah,

You don't want to have a coggins pulled now because usually it is only good for one calander year. So if you pulled one on Dec. 15, it would only be good for 2 weeks in 2004. Then you would need another in 2005. Unless the buyer is certain, wait until 2005. Call and make an appt now, but schedule it for after the new year.

A coggins test runs me $18.00 plus the farm call. Even if I haul, I still get charged an office visit. Just can't win on that one. Farm call is $45, office visit is $25, but I have to pay for gas and go to the trouble of hooking the trailer, hauling, etc. We have coggins pulled in March or earlier along with spring shots and whatever else we need. That way we have the results long before show season starts.

coggins get done once a year. it doesnt cost a big fortune, but it is money worth spending. try to get the test done once each year around the same time too...

If the buyer wants a vet check tell buyer it would be wise to get a health cert also. I would think the person hauling the horse would be responsible for following the laws according to different states.

Actually that is incorrect a coggins test is good for 6 months or a year FROM THE DATE of the test it does NOT go by calandar years.

    Top Dun,

That may be very true according to following the law, but for shows and other horse gatherings it most always says current calander year coggins required.

I was just trying to save Hannah some money. If she wanted to haul Buddy to a show next Spring, her 2004 coggins would do her no good at a lot of places.

Not in every location. Never heard of needing a current calendar year coggins test long that the coggins test be Valid according to the state law IE current with in 6 months to a year FROM the date of the test. Not a single event I've ever been to has required a coggins test with in that callendar year just a cogginst test that is VAlid and Current PER state regulations.

This is just one of the 25+shows we showed at last year. A coggins from Dec. 2003 would have done me no good even though less than a year had gone by. Most, if not all of the shows had this rule. Maybe not how things are done in NM, but that is how they are done in MI.

I never said in every location. I was only stating what has been my experience. I was only trying to help Hannah save some money in case she came across the same requirements.

If I wanted to haul my horse across the state line, in Jan of 2005 and had a coggins pulled in Dec. of 2004, I would be following the law and not ticketed or in trouble in any way. If I wanted to take my horse to a horse show in Jan. 2005 with a coggins from Dec 2004, I would be out of luck in most cases. It would make no sense for me, in my state, to get a coggins 2 weeks before the new year unless it was expired and I needed to haul somewhere.

It depends on the state. There are some states that are calendar year. There are some that are 12 months, some are 6. Then different individuals (barns, shows, etc...) have their own requirements.
