How much would you pay for a project horse?

I went to look at a really nice 3yo gelding this weekend, a project horse. He is registered, and pretty, but has almost no training. I worked with him about 10 min, during that time he reared several times, tried to bite, kicked in my general direction, and took off running 3 times dragging me behind him. Now this is only trying to walk him around his yard. So anyway, they want $500 for him, which I think is a lot considering the work he needs. But of course they want to make sure I am not going to try to run him through an auction. Hubby says "No Way" So what would you consider an appropriate price for a horse needing this much work? Or would you even get one? Oh, and he is not abused or neglected, he is happy and fat just not handled.

I would pay up to $500 for a project pony, maybe even up to $1000 if it was REALLY nice and had some training or had been started.

But I wouldn't pay that much for the one you described Just sounds like he needs a bit of training to be, I guess I would pay $200-300.

I've paid up to $900 before. But usually a project horse should be right around $500.

i would pay up to $1200 for a "project" horse/pony. and in my area you are lucky to find anything for that price. so for me $500 even needing that much work isnt bad if its a nicely conformed healthy horse.

He's THREE?! And doing THAT?! Yeah, no more than $300. I'm stingy, I, personally, wouldn't even pay $250 for him.

I paid over $7000 for Lucky as a 5 yr old, supposingly a "project" horse but CERTAINLY wasn't behaving like that, at all. Of course, my project horse actually had 2 solid years of refinement training.

If you get him good luck. Sounds like a handful lol.

I would not pay much at all for that horse. I paid $625 for a three year old who was gentle on the ground and had been started under saddle. I just paid $400 for an 11 year old tb who i can ride walk trot canter with a saddle, or bareback with just a halter and leadrope, but I got really really lucky with him. I deffinitly would not pay more than $250 or so for that horse as described.

Around here I can buy BROKE horses for under $200 so I wouldn't pay more than that even for a registered one.
