I don't know any hunter people who would take a chance on a pacer because (1) it can be really difficult to get them to canter consistently; (2) they don't usually have good trots (depending on whether they're trainer or natural pacers, partially); and (3) even if they do trot, when nervous they often revert to pacing.

When I was at Penn State a friend boarded at a barn where the owner got off track standardbreds every couple of months and retrained them. Awesome horses. GREAT temperments and FUN. But the ones that paces were really NOT suitable for hunters no matter how much work was put into them. They never lost that ability or desire to pace. They made SUPER driving prospects and nice trail/pleasure horses-- but not hunters.

No matter how nice the horse might be, being a pacer makes it very unlikely that she is highly appealing to the hunter market. And, of course, if we're talking pony hunter then we're talking kids-- and she will need to easily canter under saddle. So she's a ways away training wise from what someone would be looking for in a pony hunter.

I realize that it is usually hard to get other gaits from a pacer, but it is not really the case with her. She has a very nice flowing trot (really extended) that has placed us up to second in novice classes. When she does get the canter, it is very smooth and long, perfect for a pony hunter.
