How Much is this Billy Cook Show Saddle Worth?

I have a full QH bars, 15.5" seat Billy Cook saddle made in Sulphur, Ok. It's a medium oil with silver, one of the good old ones. I was wondering how much you all think this saddle is worth? Its in good condition, kept in a saddle bag in the house. The silver is in excellent condition. The only problem with the saddle is a scratch underneath the cantle, but it's not a glaring fault.

I've been considering selling it, to invest in a saddle with more silver, but I'm having trouble deciding. I am showing on the Mountain Horse circuit in the Western division with it. I always loved the older Dale Chavez saddles. If I end up investing in a new saddle, I need to sell this one and save up some other money to get a new one. So, the next question is - would it be better to sell the saddle and buy a more expensive saddle with more silver, or just keep this one? What brands/styles do you all prefer? I would love a saddle that looks like it should be on the AQHA circuit. My budget is around $2,000.

I hesitate to say what anything is worth, because people on this board aim low, lol, and I know I have better luck selling through other sites. Try looking at Tacktrader and ebay and Horseclicks to see what comparable saddles are priced at. Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus is in October, I believe, and that's not far from KY. People rave about the low prices they get show saddle for there. Fall is the time to buy, not sell. You'd get a better price at Christmas or in Spring, instead of selling your saddle now. See if a relative can give you loan to buy a good saddle at lowest price of the year now, allowing you time to get a decent price for yours.

First of all, that saddle is gorgeous! It has just enough silver to catch your eye, very understated and classy.( I'd keep it! )
However, if you are just looking for something different: In my opinion, its hard to beat Dale Chavez or TexTan. You can find some great deals on used show saddles online that are well-within your price range.

As for the price of your saddle, its hard to say. I sell quite a few saddles, and personally I would not take less than $1000 for it. I'm sure it is worth more, but it might be difficult to sell priced any higher. About a month ago, we bought a used circle y VERY similar to yours for $800. It was slightly more used than yours, so I would price it accordingly.

around here you could put it up for 1300.00 and have it as a barter. If that saddle fits you and gives you a good seat, why change? I think it's HSRAscal that shows in a saddle simliar to a showman, and yours, and she does well (sorry if I am completely wrong). A few friends of mine ride in showmans on the AQHA circuit, so its not all about looks, if your horse and you have talent, the judge is going to take that into consideration. I mean one of my coaches shows on the pro AQHA circuit in a blue ribbon working saddle, no silver.

As for saddles go, Blue ribbon, chavez are the nicest and seem to stay "in" style. But you'd need about 7000.00 for a good one.

If you check ebay, they usually have several Dale Chavez saddles for sale at all times. I rarely see one more than $3000.

(just an example) This one has a Buy it Now of $2695 and it comes with tack:

Me? I would keep it, it's gorgeous~!! You can always go to Montana Silversmiths and they can find you whatever silver you want to add.

Used saddles loose value so, you would, in the long run and IMHO, loose money on it by selling it and buying new.

I think it looks great just like it is.

Thanks guys! You know, I never thought about getting a different set of silver for the saddle. Will it look weird if I got different sets than were originally on? I do like the saddle, just always wanted a little more silver. Now that you all mention it, I do love the way the seat fits me and it fits my gaited horses, which can be tough to do sometimes.

I originally paid $850 for this saddle, and it included headstall and girth.

I go to Congress nearly every year, and I've seen a lot of saddles marked up quite a bit... Maybe it's just the ones I look at? But I'll keep my eye out again this year. And wow, I knew that some saddles cost about the same as one of my horses, but I forgot just how much a good one would be, haha.

find a good silversmith. I knwo we have one a couple hours away, and he offered to put Kathys silver on my saddle, and add tooling/more silver to make it "fit" and thats what I was going to recommend after I logged off. He said 700.00 CND and I'd have a custom silver done saddle. SO for me I paid 900.00 for a showman, add 700.00 in high quality silver and I have a custom saddle. LOL.
