How many times can horses actually mate?

"Sometimes she stops bucking and allows her husband to do a little bit more than usually. This “a little bit more” happens nine-twelve times a day to a great satisfaction of both of them" - Alexandеr Nevzorov

If you scroll down about halfway down the page and see the text I just quoted you will know exactly what I am talking about: http://www.hauteecole.ru/en/horses.php?sid=0&id=121

Note: The material on that page I am directing you to might be alittle graphic for some members.

Is it even possible for horses to mate that many times per day? Wouldn't she be getting pregnant all the time? How exactly does this work, do they sort out their mating times or is it when ever the stallion decides he wants to she allows him to? Does she get as much satisfaction as the stallion does if any? The stallion must have a lot of semen stored or they just do it for the satisfaction.

Yeah I found it odd and funny also, but horses are able to do the process so quickly. Maybe because it's uncomfortable for them and that's the way nature made them.

I've seen a stud do it about five times to one single mare in the space of an afternoon.

a lot of things can factor in...however, after the first so many times the stallions sperm count will drastically drop until he has a chance to rebuild it. However, if he continually tries to breed mare after mare, day after day, his sperm count will remain low...so while he is still in fact "breeding", the chances of him impregnanting a mare are slimmer.

a while back I had one of my mares in a pasture setting with a proud cut gelding. He could still get it up and work it, but was tested sterile. He would try to breed my mare upwards of 20-30 times a day. She was removed a day and a half after she was put in with him and his herd because, even though she wasn't in heat...she was still a ******, and i didn't want to risk contamination or injury to her.

My friend (who is riding in most of the pictures of my mare) has a proud cut gelding at a top show barn, and he's boarded in a pasture. He will mount any mare that is in his pasture, so they can't keep a mare in there. However, he gets really upset if he isn't allowed to "do" a mare every so often! They have to put a school horse mare in with him sometimes. Ah, horses!

BTW-- that webpage has some really neat pictures. Gorgeous!!

In a standard stud the managers will usually allow a mating 2 times a day. Morning and evening. This is usually a timing that obtains the best fertilization and breeds the most mares satisfactorily. I am of course referring to live cover.

In AI the stallion is usually collected once a day.

exactly. I worked at a breeding farm for a while and was there when they collected their stallion for AI...They would collect him in the morning for outside mares to ship the semen and then again late evening to AI their own mares. They felt live cover was too risky for their mares and stallion and preferred to do AI on all of their own.

It was a very enlightening experience.
