I honestly don't see how I'm attacking it! I can see WHY people sweat necks for cosmetic purposes. If most people didn't, they wouldn't be placing in the big shows. I PREFER to only sweat necks for health reasons. If I were to show halter, you can bet your tukus I'd be sweating. I understand and see the points people are making for BOTH sides of the argument. I, however, am not getting defensive!

Noreins. You need to chill out. There are more people on this thread other than you who said they sweat necks. We are NOT directing out posts to YOU. If we were, we would do what I just did above, or quote you. It seems you are the one wanting to argue. We have agreed to disagree with YOU but that does not mean other members do not want to read both sides of the issue. |

Think what you will, I am completely in control. This is my take on sweating necks, in case any should misunderstand it: I believe that sweating necks should really, only be used to free air flow. But, since it is still a common practice to do so and will make or break a 1st place at a decent show, I would sweat. If I have paid so much to get my horse into such an estemed show, I had better make sure it is worth the money. I do, however, feel that if you are only paying $10-$15/class and are competing with horses that you KNOW will not beat your horse, then why bother? A neck sweat cannot be comfortable for your horse! Have you ever been laying in bed during a hot summer night and just cant seem to get away from the heat, no matter how many cool places you find on the sheet? Imagine that CONSTANTLY. I feel bad for the horses that have to be sweated so often. IMHO, if it needs to be sweated every single time the horse is worked, PLUS keeping it on in the stall, then I would suggest finding a more suitable discipline. Just my VERY HONEST and un-argumentative opinion. |

Well, I only pay $5-$8 a class usually or $50-$80 to show all day but I never know ahead of time what I will be competing against. I do feel that Xander is a nicer halter horse than I usually see at open shows, but I have definitely seen nicer horses show up from time to time. I'm stuck focusing on open shows since he's a SPB which severely limits his breed show options, but that doesn't mean I don't want every possible advantage. |

By the way- my filly's sire had a beautiful neck up until his death... so do the rest of that particular owner's horses. And they don't sweat. I'm really not sure that word applies. FWIW, since people keep saying "pencil neck"- I think the stock horse style "pencil neck" looks ridiculous. There, now you can yell at me instead of sniping at one another.

Sweating a neck is wrapping a specially shaped piece of neoprene around the neck/throat latch while the horse is (in often times) being worked. Some owners use them during down time in a stall. The purpose of sweating a horse's neck is to 1) keep up with the pencil neck fad, and 2) keep the throatlatch free of excess fat. A horse 'sweats' the fat off of the neck, much like neoprene jogging shorts or neoprene belly wraps. You get rid of the excess water in the targeted areas and trim up. It is not a permanent fix, so it must be kept up in order to keep the results.

Mmmkay I am all for sweating necks but I decided to go take pictures of my friends stallion to show that I do believe a lot of horses can have naturally pretty necks. I just have to stich up for the neck sweating because I used to have a PERFECT halter mare with a thick neck "Ima Westerner" ![]() me with him ![]() and this is Sweet Pea, I don't remember the name on her papers but her dam is an own (NN) daughter of Impressive. And the little hefer didn't want to cooperate with my picture taking. |
