I'd really like to sweat my pony's neck out, its VERY thick and a little cresty...she doesn't get any grain and only two flakes of hay a day...just an easy keeper and she was worked consistantly all summer and just seemed to not lose much of it...

This is a great thread!! Now I've got some ideas and info

Through the years I have aquired a neck sweat....maybe two...I really can't remember since I never use them.

I feel that actual working the horse does more to shape the neck than putting a neck sweat on....and the end result is more lasting. I feel that with proper riding (if the horse is of age) or working in a bitting rig and long lines (if the horse is not), is a more effect way to shape and enhance the horse's conformation.
I remember reading books by Colonel Alois Podhajsky and saw photos of horses before he started working them and after severl months of proper work in long lines and/or under saddle....and the change in the conformation was amazing. Even the necks improved..and he did not use one neck sweat. That convinced me that a good training/conditioning program does a better job than any neck or body sweat....
I just just do not need them.

Even with good exercise, if you're going to show halter half way seriously, I still think you're often going to have to sweat necks.

My mare is a multi-champion halter winner and was not sweated.
My stallion has never been sweated and hasn't been beaten in the ring.
The mare Im looking at now is a buckeye winner and she is not sweated.... just a few examples

Exactly! There are plenty of winners moshing around out there who have never been sweated.

I myself am not at all into halter... just not my skeez... and my filly's neck isn't wretched by any means (it's better some days than others- she's still growing). It's certainly not thick enough that it will hinder her performance, which is what I'm most interested in. I'm just considering doing it to do it... curiosity and all!

Not saying those horses are out there who don't need sweating, but if you go to any APHA/AQHA show, you'll find that a large percentage of halter horses are sweated.

Yeahhh, but Sandra, Rumonek and I are not talking about stock horses. Well, Sandra may have snuck in some experience with a stock horse when I wasn't paying attention... but I doubt it! We know our own!

ACTUALLY I've show stock horses in halter... and did quite well. Mind you this isn't at AQHA/APHA shows
And, never sweated. I'd be more worried about other issues in the stock horse halter world than a neck :rolls eyes:

*CAUTION* NOT starting a breed rant here- all breeds, especially when being born a victim of specialized breeding, has major flaws in the "system"
