How many miles can a horse and rider travel in a day? Assuming the horse is in great condition and a good trail with adequate water stops.

i would think at a walk they could travel really far. (correct me if i am wrong). but i think it also depends on the terrain. im not sure though.

It depends on the physical condition of the horse. If this is an endurance horse I'd shoot for 100 miles or so, but I'm not sure. It depends on which increments it is traveling in and which gait I suppose. If they are at a walk then I assume that a serviceably sound horse that is in very good shape could probably go on for quite some time. Think back to the old West.

At a walk the pace is about 4 mph. I've done a 75 mile endurance ride in 7 1/2 hours. But remember that that is with a vet check every so often to ensure hydration, gut, etc.

What are you trying to accomplish? How far do you want to go? My bf and I fantasize about riding down to Naples (500 miles) on horseback.

I am trying to finger out if my girlfriend is lying to me on yet another subject. I know almost nothing about horses but she calls herself a cowgirl. When I wondered out loud if I could ride the100 mile long Maah Daah Hey Trail (Medora, ND) in one day on a mountain bike, she claimed she rode 200 miles in one day on her horse. I didnít want to upset the vacation so I didnít call her on this being just a small lie, but now there are more lies so it is time to find out the truth. Thank you for your help, you will remain anonymous.

really depends on the terrain. The tevis cup ride is a 100 mile endurance ride but is over some pretty tough terrain and some pretty severe changes in climate... but the fastest time it was ever completed in was just under 11 hrs... the slowest was almost 16.5 hrs and average they say is about 13.5 hrs. According to the race website the average race rate of speed is 7.48 mph

At that rate it would take 26.73 hours to complete. So I doubt she did it in a day. Not to mention that I don't know if the horse could hold up.

Thanks for the help, I thought it was a tall tail to ride 200 miles in one day. If her other stories turn out like this one, it will be time for a new girl friend.

Your average horse would be pretty spent after a 25 mile ride at a walk. Top endurance racers go a hundred in a day.

Maybe she's just not real good with numbers.
