I don't know how long my farrier takes. Not real long, but we do talk. I took picures of him this last time because I told him I don't get to see my horses much. LOL

I am thrilled with our farrier. He does such a good job. He is taking new clients, so I told him to put an ad up in our local classifieds.

He did, it was so boring. He told me the next time he came he didn't get a single call. All his did is put his name and phone number and said he is a farrier.

So I put up an ad for him, and I got reference inquiries right away. I haven't heard how many new clients he got off the ad I placed for him. I used pictures, description of his work, and put my name in there as a reference. Pictures do wonders for ads!

My farrier takes about 20 minutes to do the actual trimming and filing and such (no shoes), but before/after he also takes the time to explain stuff about Riley's hooves and what he's going to do, etc and after he will have me walk towards and away from him and watch and make sure he did a good job and Riley is fine. I love how thorough he is!

He also is really knowledgeable and I can have a real conversation with him while he's trimming Riley and he used to show jumpers, and event and we can talk about that and we discuss Riley's training and everything which is really nice! He's really funny too, and he brings a fan and Riley is enthralled for the whole time and we're all cooled off!

If it's a well behaved horse that has been under my care regularly, about 20 minutes is my norm for a trim. Pathological hooves can take a bit longer..like a severly foundered and neglected case once took me over an hour to saw off the toes, yes SAW as in hacksaw. His toes curled like big sheep horns and curled completely back around ..but I digress...

First time horses average 30 minutes for me to set up, if they are canankerous, just depends.

Well I found out the hard way that having yayhoos on the opposite hillside across the valley firing guns seeminly everytime your farrier picks up a foot (or even more fun every time he drives a nail!!) makes the job last MUCH longer.......

all the more reason to choose a farrier with a nice "rear view" : )

Our new farrier came out last week. He did Sienna and Storm for me and then did three of John's dad's draft horses. My two took about 15 minutes for both of them. The drafts took about 2 hours combined but they weren't cooperating. That was the first time that farrier came out here and I was very impressed how quickly and efficiently he got the job done, plus he was great with the horses!

The new farrrier I have for Denali took 2 hours to ***** and shoe Denali, I was very impressed.

Although to be honest I hope it takes a little less time this session, Denali's patience was worn thin by the end.
