That is awesome! many of your top level trainers will take a horse and do exactly that. Work them until they have all 3 gaits down. Refinement comes the next day. Amazing what you can do, when concentrating only on one horse, pushing them to their limits as far as they will go. I try not to do that (more self preservation than anything....lol) But I know how to do it. Lots of round pen work, lots of really watching the horse, knowing when to take that next step, when to back off. One of these years, I want to go watch those symposiums like that.

I rember reading some where that it is not horses that have a short attention span it is humans who do....I can't remember who said it though...probably either Dave Jones or John Lyons. This sort of event shows what can be done if the trainer's attention is focused, attention is closely paid to the horse and the steps are followed one at a time and built upon.

That's cool. I agree Sandra-A1 that humans have a short attention span, not just the horses. There are days when I'm working with my horse and catch myself thinking about work or other things I need to get done. I have to take a step back and refocus myself back to the job at hand and only that one. It takes practice to get into that frame of mind.

The entire point of the "NH" way of training is learning to READ what the horse is communicating so that you can better fabricate scenarios in which then can successfully behave in the manner you want, and therefore you can set them up TO succeed and offer them reward, which leads to over all learning. OF course you have to have enough experience in reading and speaking horse to pull off that much success in that short of a time span, but is a goal to work towards by the rest of us that are not quite there yet! I've seen it done with completely wild horses as well... of course they need hours and hours under their belt to gain refinement and reliability but it is absolutely incredible how flexible a horses mind can be if presented with information in the right manner!
