| Full Member | How long do you wait before showing?
As the title says, how long do you wait when you have a new horse, before you take them to their first show? do you take them along as soon as you can just to get them used to it or do you wait? in this instance the horse is 4 and has never been shown in-hand or ridden before. i am just wondering what other peoples experiences have been, time wise. thanks! |

Well, it depends on the horse - but IMO, if you are going to the show to be a competitor, at least 3-6 months. My horse was 2 when I bought him, so it was more than that! But the horse I lease, I took her to her first show in about 4 months after we started working together.

it depends on how broke the horse is, and how experienced the rider. personally, I take mine to a few shows just to "camp out" on before i ever enter a class. IMPO, riding in the breaks and warm up pens at a 3 day show gets them further along than a month and a half at home!

My new horse who has never been shown before I took a week after I bought her. I think it really depends on the horse. I like to take them to all the local shows wheather they are ready or not, because they are inexpensive and the more they are put in that enviornment the more comfortable they will become.

My paint pony trailered in in the morning, I watched him go in the ring w/t/c, stalled him with hay and water, and took him to a show late in the afternoon. He won reserve.

I agree, it depends on the horse. With Pie, when I was brining him back from an injury, it was almost a year after I started riding him before I even thought about taking him to even a schooling show. Though, with Buddy, I got him in January, and 4 months later we did our first event and haven't looked back since.
