How long do you keep the foal in the stall?

My mare hasn't foaled yet (dang it), but I was wondering at what point you would let the foal out of the stall to wander around with its mom (they will have their own pasture separate from the other horses, but share a common cable fence). I don't want to be too overprotective, want it to get necessary exercise, but don't want to do it too early.

Three days. I read somewhere (I think it was Blessed Are the Broodmares/Foals) that it can take up to that long for their eyesight to fully adjust, and as we also had cable fences I didn't want to risk putting her out before she could truly see well. Good way to a broken neck.

foaling clinic we use waits till the next morning, assuming mom is OK and baby is healthy and getting around okay.

They aren't going to wander too far from mom at first.

How come Allure had to be the exception to the rule in everything?

I can't tell you how many days in her first week I would come out into the pasture and see momma standing by herself... and baby come crashing out of the underbrush a distance away a little later.

LOL. 'Cause they know when we've already made up our minds they are keepers.

I have video of Deb sassing her mom when she's just three hours old.

Ember was born outside... I planned for her to be born outside, but she came early. She was ushered into a stall with mom and stayed there for almost 2 weeks with daily supervised turnout in our yard. When we finished the fence in the paddock by putting up safer, wire mesh in their area she was turned out with mom full time.

If the weather is fine, and the fencing is fine, and they will be by themselves for a while, nothing says they can't go out immediately. The sooner the feet get movement on solid ground, the better.
