Well firstly, I'd clean out my brushes and grooming materials. Then, I'd "super bathe" the horse the day before the show (after he's had light exercise), let him dry, and then do LOTS and LOTS of grooming to really get those oils up and help create muscle tone. After everything, I'd leave him in a stall with a very light sheet on so he stays clean. I also like to braid tails and keep them in tail bags. I like to use Lazer Sheen for the body. Anything German (or something that sounds foreign) seems to work really well lol.

Really, there are LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of little tips I could say but I'm too lazy to think of them all now lol.

I personally like using rubbing alcohol or whitening shampoos for white spots. Then, when they're dry, I brush in some baby powder to really lighten them up. I stay away from baby oil because it heats up on horses. I prefer to use lotions, vaseline, and equine products. Also, I really like to keep my horse fully clipped and moisterized (use shampoo and conditioner all over when you bathe them...it also helps repel dirt). I use dish soap to clean hooves. Oh, and apply fly spray if you can. I like NatureSect (or whatever it's called). Works nicely and is makes them shiny. For dark/red horses, I feed them paprika to give them some highlights and keep their coats from bleaching too much. Baby wipes, swiffer pads, and fabric softener cloths work nicely to polish 'em up.

Also, I'd make sure my horse had a good, healthy diet and lots of exercise. I'd feed Moor Glo or Performance Pro Blend (pricey, but worth it).

Buuut, personally, I really like Rio Vista and Magic Cowboy products. Show sheen works really well on manes and tails (after the mane and tail has been braided of course). I really only rub the show sheen on before a warm-up.

The trick to getting them really ncie for a show, is to make sure they still look great at a show, and this requires assistance. So, I'd gather up my friends to help me out at a show. Really, they're worth their weight in gold.

For crazy tail tangles, I use a half and half mixture of baby oil and water. Just remember shake 'n' spray, shake 'n' spray. Just be warned that the tail will be a bit slimy for several hours afterwards (but if you're bringing him in after a week in the pasture and need to get through the tail, it's worth it).

right before you go into the ring I like to run a swiffer pad over my horse's coat to get the dust off

Never though of a swifter pad, but now that you mention it that sounds like a great idea! I've always used plain old rags, but I'm going to try that. Thanks!!
