No one is making a fool of anyone here.... the kid is obviously bored, or simply unable to express herself properly. No need to run her off. |

ok my horse is 2 years old. He is a paint and he is smart and he thinks he controlls everything. i walk him every day he is halter trained and he stands like a show horse. I trained him how to do that. He has won trophies for horse at halter at school fair. i really need him to do jumps i had the vet look at his joints and they are ready to start jumping. He is very skitish sometimes or other times he is waiting for me to come and get him. The reason i am trying to get him to jump because my other horse is a jumper and i think it is a good idea to train him to do that too. |

No 2 year old is ready for jumping in my honest opinion, Joints are not fused fully and therefore the impact from jumping is not going to help towards the long term soundness of the horse. If he thinks he controls everything then maybe your time would be better spent teaching him some more respect. Training a baby is not about just training them to stand still, you want to be teaching him the basics that will give him good foundations for his later riden career. Why do you NEED to do the jumps now, if your other horse is a jumper why not jump that one and allow the baby to grow and develop, plus with looking after the older mare that you are trying to regain the confidence with would benifet from your time more so than the 2 year old

Lets let him grow a bit more and in the mean time you can use the money you would have spent vetting him after he injured himself jumping to save up for a few trainer sessions. And you will also want to change vets. Yours sounds a bit dodgy. | |

You first need xrays to determine if the growth plates at the knee are finished closing (and I just about guarantee that at 2, they aren't - looking at another year-ish for that to happen) Beyond that, there is more to be concerned about when it comes to riding in general, let alone jumping. The hock and spine do not finish growing until around age 5. Quote:

Besides that, so what if your other horse is a jumper? Your 2yo has a LOT of education to go through before he starts jumping. So the answer to your question "how do I teach a horse to jump" is simple: Teach him how to be ridden correctly first. Flatwork. If you need help with that, and you *do*, then please work with your trainer Not nice. At all. ![]() ....why did I reply, why did I reply, why did I reply...
