How do you file your taxes?

So, now that the government and the state will not send me free tax forms and booklets, I am trying to figure out whether to write them to send them or find out how I am supposed to submit them without having to pay a fee on-line. I looked at turbo tax, but they only offer free 1040EZ and only federal not state.
I could not find the forms at the post office or library last year, where they said they were located. they were all gone and they were not expecting to get more, plus they are not conveniently located near me.
so, what free services are available that you can trust will not hound you and send you emails requesting you buy and upgrade, etc.?
I want to do them myself, not take them to someone, even if that service was free, i don't trust anyone but me to do it!
How do you file your taxes and where do you go to find out how to do it for free or do you just download the forms and mail them in the old fashioned way?

Have you tried going straight to the IRS website? I beleive they have the efile option, but I am not 100% certain.

I've used Turbo Tax for the last 6 years, and before that I used Tax Act. But then, I have a boatload of deductions, so need to itemize.

If you can download the forms, I'd go ahead and do that. You can mail them in or e-file them on the Federal and state websites.

I'm not sure about something without a fee. I've used TurboTax in the past and H&R Block the past two years.

IRS free online filing: http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,...ml?portlet=104. I believe you can also download PDF tax forms where you can type directly in to the boxes (fillable forms).

Your state is likely to also have an online filing system.

If you're getting a refund, it often comes much quicker with e-filing than if you used a paper form. That was how I actually got my money rather than an IOU (no joke) from California one year!

they do have a free file on there that apparently gives you options for downloading free software. I think I will fill out the paperwork by hand and then see about that. Now to find out how to do state taxes. This is the first year I have had computer access at home and never wanted to file personal stuff on outside computers before, so... am still learning how to do all this!

I use Turbotax and there are fees to file both. Never was there anything free for doing your taxes...

There is an ad in this thread, here's the link.

I think most people use TurboTax mainly for its help filling out the forms, which you seem to have fully under control. I never had to download software from the IRS or my state to file through them. Here's a more direct link than what I put up before: https://www.freefilefillableforms.co...ateway/FED.htm. I personally would download the blank forms (http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/index.html), fill them out on my computer, then transfer the info to the e-filing site. Saves paper, and electronic copies are harder to lose and easier to back up than paper ones. (I have all my important documents saved on a flash drive that I keep in my safe deposit box, as extra backup.)

If you're concerned about leaving personal information on a computer, you can create an encrypted folder (e.g. with TrueCrypt, http://www.truecrypt.org/) and place all files with personal information in it. You can also install TrueCrypt on a flash drive or external hard drive.

Edit: I'm really not as paranoid as this post may make me sound!
