if my mare tries to kick me I give her a smack on the belly...she just needs to know its not allowed. Also if you stand with your body touching hers, it will be harder for you to kick at you...

she doesn't kick me kick me, she is such a sweety that she has never wanted to hurt me, she just lifts it like a warning, maybe grabing it if she does that would work?

Slow and steady... work you way back, then around the inside of the leg, then slowly get back up in there. Also do have to light of a touch.. that might be more ticklish then.

just be very gentle back there. she's probably very ticklish in that area. you can also try holding onto the foot she's lifting as a warning with one hand and wash with the other? i dunno if your that coordinated or not though.

Sorry.. I failed english 101.. I meant don't touch her lightly, I would do it with the same pressure I brush with.. then I do it a bit harder when it is really dirty.

Hope was the same way when i would try to clean her before Toby came, but prolly b/c she was sore. BUT, another idea here, i just let her kick, and kept going when she'd put her foot down, eventually she quit all together and let me clean her, NOW< she did try the kicking thing for about the first week, and then would just stomp her foot, and after that she'd stand still. so maybe just be cautions, and let her kick, as soon as the foot hits the ground, go again. she'll lern that just b/c she's kicking, you aren't going to stop. just an idea, but if it's not working, don't get yourself hurt.

Make sure the water is warm, it can be unpleasant if it's cold. Use soapy water, don't apply the soap directly to the teet. Use a soft cloth or sponge.
