How Do You Burn The End of a Nylon Rope?

Hey guys....how do you burn the end of a nylon rope with out it turning black? I have seen some really pretyy nylon rope that I have thought would make pretty reins. Simple enough to make a set of reins but a lot of times when you burn nylon rope it turns black. What is the trick to burning the ends of the rope and not turning it black?

W/o making it black? Generally it will turn black no matter what if you burn it with an open flame, I beleive what is done is a fuding of a seperate coating over the nylon. Like plastic. You could try getting a hot plate and see if the nylon will just melt that way without touching a flame, but no promises that it wont turn black.

Just use the flame but hold the rope far enough away that it melts without burning... kinda like cooking a hot dog on the fire... you can also use a zipppo and melt a bit take away and shape melt a bit take away and shape.. hope that helps

My Dad suggested a soldering (sp?) iron. I think that's what he said, anyway. I have no idea what it looks like or what it's for or anything, but when I was wondering the same thing, that's what he said.

I turn on the gas stove and hold the end of the rope close to the flame. It takes a steady hand to keep it close enough to melt but not close enough to burn black (most of mine are black-tipped ). I imagine that if you could find a very hot surface instead of a flame to put the end of the rope on it would do the trick.

I use to have a pan that I would heat up on high and use make sure it is one that you don't mind scraping thuogh because the nylon sticks to it

We always heated up a thin piece of metal and you 'slice' through the rope. Same effect as Peggy's pan idea.
Just don't hold the heat ON the rope and it won't burn. Same as cooking
