Ok, lets see if this works...
I scanned a sketch that demonstrated how to braid and wrote captions into it to help guide you. I hope it works.
As a general note, many smaller braids will give the appearance of a longer neck, and fewer larger braids will shorten.
Bands are find to braid, but will not have the finished 'together' look that yarn will have when you are finished. (The pic of Serendipity above that I posted is done in bands)

Awwww Man! All that work i did to try and show you how to braid, and it didn't show up well at all
Oh well... here is a link to a site that gives some pretty good instructions How to Braid , if you need more help i'd be happy to take pics of my own horse step-by-step sometime this week when I braid her again.
