In my experience with rain rot I find it needs to dry , so the more goop you apply to get rid of it will only trap the moisture and prevent it from healing. When my horses had it I used the betadine scrub on it , even in this cold weather I just used a warm soapy bucket of it, rinsed and towel dried the area . once dry I put a blanket on. I took the blanket off everyday so it could get air. This is what has always worked for me. I was told by a vet not to use creams and gels because it cannot dry up.

You also have to make sure you wash your brushes and blankets often ..

Sounds like the rainrot 'bug' is hiding in something & reinfecting. One of my horses had rainrot 1 winter, I treated his spots w/ Iodine. You also have to aggressively treat the brushes & blankets; disinfect whatever you have/ use. Wash in bleach/ lysol/ disinfectant all the brushes & grooming tools. Wash w/ chlorox/ lysol/ bleach soap the blankets. Spray the underside of the blanket being used w/ disinfectant, put on a cleaned blanket ASAP and disinfect wash the blanket currently on. Wash & swap the blankets occasionally/ frequently. DO NOT let anybody borrow your brushes and DO Not use anybodys handy brush. The only way to conquer Rainrot is to Declare War on it, and be militant, or it will keep coming back til you figure out where it comes from. Best wishes.

Its not mean to keep your brushes separate, its smart. Sharing brushes might be why your horse keeps getting infected, and shared brushes might be infecting another horse. Someone should tell the 4H leader theres rainrot in the barn, and hopefully theyll make sure the brushes arent switched around? You could mayb even buy a cheap locking plastic toolbox for your brushes so they dont get borrowed.

I used Micro Tek Shampoo and spray on my tb mare when she got it all over her, it worked great, and the spray kills it and keeps it from coming back...Cathy

Dutch used to have it terribly...
I talked to my vet and this is what he said to do.
Get some mineral oiland rub it on the infected area everyday for a week
then pic of what you can
then repeat
by this time the rainrot should be all gone and you will have a bald spot that will grow back
you can use this cream my vet gave me that is a mixture of antibiotic and something that makes hthe hair grow back.

Betadine Solution. You can buy it in the grocery store. Put it on, leave for 15 minutes, then rinse. Apply it to the brushes too.

We use Johnson's baby shampoo. Shampoo area with it, rinse, then re-apply and leave until the next day. Repeat every day until healed. Mega Tek skin problem shampoo and gel are the BEST, but are more expensive.
