Post Horses/Donkeys in food Chain

I don't know if anyone else in UK watched the 'Food Police' last night, but I did and was horrified.

They went round taking samples of Salami as there was a rumour going round that it contanined horse/donkey meat, and although this wouldn't hurt you physically, they knew that people would be emotionally upset if they knew they were eating our four legged friends which are classed as domestic animals in UK, just like our Dogs.

Anyway, the sample had to be sent to Germany for a special DNA Test - over 50 per cent contained horse or donkey. Some of the samples came from Top Supermarkets (I won't name them). They broke the law by not listing that it contained horse/donkey meat.

It showed you a lady who ran a rescue for Donkeys - she was bottle feeding 3 foals - there mothers had been stolen during the night - she tried everything to track them down - with no luck

She called in an expert - he showed her a video of Donkeys being shipped over seas for food. It was sick - there were a couple that had died in the transporter and the others were treading all over them.

Aparently 18'000 horses and donkeys are shipped over seas from UK for human consumption every year.

I don't like Salami, but some were in Sausages as well. I will never eat another as long as I live.

Did anyone else watch the programme? If not what are your thoughts? These weren't going to feed starving people - they were coming back as Salami and Sausage to this country.

Well apart from the well known supermarkets - the main ones where back street butchers. They showed you picture in France where the sausages where just hanging up all in the windows labled Chevaux. It's the norm there, but over here, well it just turned my stomach.

I felt so sorry for lady at the donkey rescue - if you could of seen the sweet little foals being bottle fed. with no mamas.

I used to go to Auctions with my Dad, the meat man was always there, and they still are today - I don't go anymore. It would just kill me. I hate some of the Welsh A breeders, they breed so many foals, and half of them end up going for meat, the ones that don't make the grade. Some go for as little as £5 - all for meat frown

My stomach is turning flip flops. I, personally, don't eat beef, pork, deer meat, or anything else with hooves. AACk, can't stomach the idea of possibly eating horse/donkey meat. There have been rumors flying over here that McDonald's uses horse meat, but to my knowledge, it hasn't been tested. Isn't Chevaux the french term for horse? Or is it chevelle?? I, personally, think that you should name the supermarkets, if they are world wide, I certainly won't shop there any more!!

It could of been the other french word Spyro, I know a little French, but not that much blushing

But it was definately horse

Wouldn't I get into trouble if I named the Supermarkets? and someone picked up on it - it might be better if I did it through PM

Another point that I forgot to mention - there has to be a certain percentage in the meat for it to be declared - that made me want to be veggie - I mean you just never know what your eating nowadays. bawling

That's really disturbing, luckily I don't like salami but I know many people who do and wouldn't feel too good about it if they knew they were eating horse/donkey. Thats so horrible about the donkeys being shipped over like that, I really am sick to my stomach now and I am never touching a breakfast sausage again!
I really wish horse/donkey slaughter should be discontinued. My horse was on his way 'up north' when we picked him up at a sales barn from auction and he is a very sweet and sucessful animal. Just the thought of my horse being in a salami or sausage makes me feel really bad. Horses arent bred for slaughter.
Candygirl-Thank you for posting that and I was just wondering if you could either post or PM me the market names? Thanks!

Here in the us tens of thousands of horses are slaughtered inhumanely each year!!!!!!!!! Mostly from the racing industry, auctions and PMU (killer buyers buy them and sell them to slaughter houses)
I am TOTALLY AGAINST eating and slaughtering of horses, it is the one thing that makes me boil, that and horse abuse, neglect and mistreatment.
It is discusting and stupid!!!!!!!

Actually, the numbers of horses directly from those industries are less than you think.

Most of the horses that go to killers are unregistered, backyard horses that the owners either can't afford anymore or decide they don't want anymore and take them up to the local sale. Since they don't put a high enough price on them, those horses usually end up at the Killers. Killers can only spend so much at an auction. And usually it is around 300-450 in today's economy. I think the last sale I saw they were buying horses at around avg 345. Like 25-34 cents a pound. They buy by the pound, not by bloodlines, training, etc. Many of the TB breeders want and get more than that for their horses. Yes some end up at the killers, usually the duds or injured horses that can't be bought or won't be bought by anyone.
