I agree about the slaughter issues. My original intent was to hopefully make people in the area aware of what's happening and hopefully have others suggest ways to make their horses secure. No one should have to loose their horses in such a manor. Thanks for your thoughts.

This sort of thing was still happening when the plants were open! I think you have forgotton that horsemeat has not, and cannot be sold in the US for human consumption! I've said it before....I'll say it again. I am always amazed at how much "damage" the closing of the slaughter houses has caused this country (according to some). It made hay and feed prices go up. It made fuel prices go up. It caused millions and millions of people to lose thier jobs and homes. Now, I'm hearing it is now causing IDIOTS to butcher horses in Florida. BTW....you said this wasn't just happening in Florida. Where else is it happening? I've only heard about Florida.

You should have read further Stormy. We were also discussing reasons why we thought it may be happening. Some time ago, and I can't find the article, and I looked for it, there were horses being found in California. It was never solved as to what or why the horses were chopped up either. They were called mutilations rather being butchered.

If our justice system would just change the punishment to fit the crime...... this may come to an end. Right now the penalties and punishment is NO WHERE NEAR what it should be. Im no where near FL, but I can say without a doubt that if this were to happen here.... the parties responsible would not have to worry about the authorities. .....

I agree totally. If it were thought of as grand theft like a car or diamonds and involve prison terms, would it deture some of the stuff that's happening? I think the same thing should happen in abuse and starvation cases too. The thought of going to prison could change minds.

Stormy= Hey...imagine that, you and I finally agree on something. I do not think the slaughter issue has anything to do with what is happening in Florida. The fact that investigators have chalked it up to the selling of the meat on the black market is just a specualtion that was given a voice by the media. If there was true money to be made on the black market for horse meat, this would indeed be happening all over the country and there would be more than 17 horses in six month. I agree whole heartedly, that the punishment for animal abuse is far too lenient and resources for finding the culprits, too few. We are talking about the Miami-Dade county area of Florida though. I would imagine law enforcement resources are already stretched to the limits and unfortunately the lowly horse not a priority when dividing up pieces of the financial pie. The only way these guys will be brought to justice is if the horse owner happens to catch them in the act and has no problem unloading a 12 gauge shot gun. You can bet law enforcement will be scrambling then......to bring the horse owner to justice.

Anatolian Shepards. They are marvelous stock guard dogs. I watched a special on them. There was a sheep ranch in Montana that was loosing a third of it's lamb crop to coyotes and wolves. They bought three Anatolian Shepards and no more lamb loss. These dogs are huge too and have no problem doing what they are bred to do...protecting livestock from harm....and strangers. That's why I said in an earlier post I should become an Anatolian Breeder.

Realistically though, any type of outdoor dog that sends out the alarm when strangers are around would be a good deterrent.
