| Senior Member+ | Horse with to much energy!?
My horse is a totally different dude during the winter.I ride him EVERY day,and he gets turned out every day as well(if there is no snow blizzard etc.).But he still has to much energy left,he get`s aggresive since he can`t let it out anywhere. What I mean by aggresive is that he starts to bit,and be dominat over his pasture friends, and he starts to act up(always wants to go and run,nip me etc).He starts to lose his respect and I just had it!He is not an OTTB,infact he is 15 He is a very strong horse, but nothing that can`t be handled under saddle. Do you think it`s bad for him if I free lunge,EVERY DAY,for 15-35minutes then give him a 10minute break and afterwars do our regular riding routine of 40-50 minutes? The reason I`m asking is because it get`s pretty could here,in NY,and some people don`t ride because they think it`s bad for the horse? Noone in the barn where I board rides the horses very hard at this time of year. If you have other suggestions you can, ofcourse, tell me |

I`m not sure what kind of hay he gets, just regular hay-nothing speciall. His pasture is big but covered in ice and snow ofcourse during the winter,he can run around in it. | |

if he has good weight on him mabey wean him off the grain alltogether and just increase the hay also i dont see a problem with longeing him before riding to help burn some excess energy

I would suggest that instead of just free lunging him to get rid of excess energy, do some actual tasks with him at liberty. Do things like yielding the hind and the front end, moving off a steady pressure and a rythmic pressure, ask him to go sideways on the rail, and then try it without the rail. If you have access to jumps or poles, do things like backing over the pole, moving sideways over the pole, set up a an "L" shape with the poles and back him through it, send him over the barrels, between the barrels, through gates and other obstacles. Do things that stimulate his mind too, not just his muscles. Even spending just 15 to 20 minutes on this will really help his attitude a lot.

The snappy weather really gets to some of them, makes them more hyped up. Is he TB?
