Just wanted opinions on horse blankets. My sister-in-law is dead set against blankets for horses who are turned out during the day. Our horses are turned out from 8am to 5:30pm weather permitting. I'm new with horses and I thought people turned their horses out with blankets. I'm looking for opinions on if you do and if so what brand/type and/or what to look for in a turn out blanket. Thanks in advance! |

Why exactly does she not want blankets?

She says that horses can get hurt and it's just to dangerous to even risk putting one on. We live in Michigan and today it's 32 with wind chill of 18, yet sunny. My horse is out, but should he have a blanket on?

Of course horses can get hurt. Do you know know exactly what her concerns are of the blanket hurting the horse?

If they were to get a leg strap or something caught (which if your pasture is safe really shouldn't happen) it's just going to break.

As long as you have one that fits, it'll be fine. Has he already grown a full winter coat though? If so, he'll get too hot with one on.
