Horse trickling/dripping urine

Well, one of the horses my neighbor owns that he asked me to ride is dripping urine. I was concerned and told him to call a vet, but he didn't seem to really care. The horse just continually drips urine. He does appear slightly swelled and he seems agitated. Does he just need to be cleaned??

My first guess would be urinary stones, in any case definitly a vet case. Could also be a concrement at the end of the uretra but that can be difficult to get at without sedatives.

the horse may have a bean - and if it is large enough to block the urine from passing the horse will eventually stop drinking or eating - it can easily kill them. That needs to be checked right away- they can also get cancer . I bought a little arab that was never cleaned and he was blocked from a bean - it was big enough that he would pass a little- he dripped also from the pressure but could not urinate freely- he looked bloated toward the backend.The lady that had him had just got done saying how he never gotten sick and he collapsed right in front of me. She called the vet out and he traq'd him and when he finally dropped down the bean was up inside and huge and hard as a rock- Ive also seen one that had cancer of the penis- a tumer- it can actually eat thru the side and cause them to leak out- sometimes the owner will explain that the horse "pees up agaisnt the wall when its really squirting out the side of the penis and hitting the wall. I saw that once too. They can have maggots up in there too even if theres no problem at all . That horse needs to be checked for all that first- esp. if its a large bean , thats something that is easily taken care of and the poor horse should not have to suffer for something so simple to take care of. How old is this horse- ? and what color?

This horse is about 15. He has owned him about 5 years. Considering how his hoof care is, I am sure he hasn't ever had his sheath cleaned. Aren't you supposed to do it ever year? The horse is chestnut and his coat seems very dull, in fact I can pull hair out and it feels course... he also has dry skin. Oh, and I forgot he seems to sweat excessively.

If it were my horse, I would call the vet immediately, but since it is my neighbors I was unsure what to do... hoping I can convince him he needs to call the vet...

from what i am reading here this is clearly a case of neglect, so you should call the Sheriff if he refuses to call the vet, because this poor thing is suffering and obviously the owner doesn't give a rats a**.
Swelling, dull coat and agitation would be a deep red Flag to me as a horse owner...

If theres anyway you can see the horse while hes dropped- you might be able to check it out yourself. If the horse is bloated looking then it could very well be a bean- some get large ones in one year or less- others dnt get beans at all. They should at the very least get checked once a year- more so then cleaning- if they get a bean or have a large bean on the yearly checks they need it more often. Thats the important thing to check- the cleaning is not life threatening - a bean can be if left too long. I asked about the color because light or gray- horses can be more prone to cancer- but any horse can get it . IF you can get the bean out- or know how and the horse wont kick your head off- id check for that first. Theres no way this horse should have to suffer - either they take care of what he needs or get rid of him. Its horseownership- maybe the aspca needs to get involved - he should not have to suffer because they are too lazy to take care of him. if it is a bean large enough to cause this- it will soon be too late to help him. You should not ride him until you know whats going on either- he doesnt need that on top of his problems- maybe you can tell the owners that you refuse to ride him until its taken care of. It isnt fair to ask the horse to work if his veterinary needs arent taken care of first.

I agree with Dallas, see if you can check him for beans. I had to clean Spy every couple of months or so. He was just that dirty! IF he hasnt done him in 5 years, be prepared! He may need a vet to sedate him if he is extremely nasty and sore though. Is it possible for you to check him? Remind his owner that coggins tests are required every year, and if he is due, maybe he will schedule the vet to come and do it, and he can also check his sheath area. Poor boy....

I agree. If it comes to the case where the owner is just neglecting the poor thing, you have the right to call the police or a human society to come out and investigate.

I am unsure if I would be able to check/clean him myself... he seemed so agitated, he would barely hold still while I brushed him! I lunged him only because he insisted and I felt like I had to because I had already been "paid" to work them. I do think he is neglecting them and I think the horses (he has 30) are only status symbols/possensions to him and nothing more. I am unsure about calling the spca or someone like that because he is a lawyer for the county. I am afraid of what would happen... what have I gotten myself into??

Hmmm, I would tell him that you cannot work with this hrose until he has his sheath checked. Ask any male, when they are hurting down there, they get VERY cranky!!!!
