That's wonderful that YOU would. But the reality is, the majority of people won't, and some can't. So it's just not feasable. We can't FORCE people to do that.

BarnBrat it doesn't even cost that much. Although, I suppose it depends on where you live.
I have a horse that will be put down when his body says it is time. Severe arthritis in the hock, time is taking it's toll. I have already looked into how to bury him. There is a service that will pick him up, after put to sleep, and will bury him. It is a business. My horse will not be buried alone, takes up to much land that way, he will be buried with other horses.

They don't want sick horses, nor old ones. So they wouldn't slaughter her anywayz.

I would prefer for her to be slaughtered than to have to put up with that any longer. IMO, slaughter would be more humane than making her live that kind of life.

Actually a lot of old horses do go through the slaughter pen, and lame, mistreated and skinny ones as well.

I too will put my horse down when his time comes (luckily he is only 8 this spring), and shell out the cash for it. But there are many people who won't, or can't. We put down my first pony when he was 27 (he had cancer in his sheath). I couldn't imagine ever having sent him off on a slaughter truck. But, until this problem of over breeding is solved, slaughter is a neccesary evil.

You exept people who make minimum wage, who got a free horse from a friend, cuz it was free, to use their FOOD money JUST to have a horse be killed the "right" way? When they can send it to slaughter, and not have to deal with it, AND let there be use of it.

Just another view

I feel the same way Jess, although I am "pro" slaughter I personally could not send my own horses to slaughter (unless I absolutely had to). My last horse broke his leg, I had the money to euthanize, and the guy who was boarding him for me was kind enough to bury him for me in his field. Sheyene was MY responsibility, he was MY friend and it was my decision to bury him. Not everyone is as lucky as I am.

We brought Barney into the vet, and he disposed of the body. Actually, my father brought him in. I couldn't bare to go. We have sold one horse to slaughter though, purposely. But that's a different story LOL

If I was a person making minimum wage I'd get someone to shoot the horse myself and find a way that I could bury it...But I would never send one of my horses to slaughter. Personally, Even if that video is old I dought there has been a huge change in the treament of slaughter horses. What could they change...after..that is not a peaceful death at all..and My guess is that there would be no other way If you have a un domesticated frightened horse on your hands. You guys saw it..it take like three shots to kill the horse Some missed and got hit in the shoulder or other places. But yeah..I think it is definatly a cruel end..And IMO there is nothing humane about horse slaughter, And its not like there is one in every state..some horses have to travel very far INJURED crammed in trailors.
