Asian culture is much older than ours, and yet they eat all three of those meats... Who ever said anything in this thread about wanting to eat horse meat? Did I miss that one? I only saw it acknowledged as a meat, which it is, whether some like it or not. That doesn't mean that I go searching for those particular meats to eat, but, who decides what it is wrong and right to eat? Not me, for sure... What in the world does this have to do with the original topic? The OP asked for some photos, not a slaughter debate! I happen to be right in the middle of writing a paper on this for my vet tech program in college, a paper which happens to be pro... but I am most certainly not going into depth in this particular thread, because it is not appropriate. Maybe I only added to the problem by even responding to the above questions, and if so, I apologize. If you have pics, please post them as I did. I am confident that the OP will educate herself on the politics without excessive help from the rest of us. Kristina

...*Ahem*...horses are raised for meat in Africa and Asia. Thank you. And cattle are also used for riding. I went to high school with a girl who rode her cow at rodeo's all the time. I also breed goats as pets, and my goats are house broken and come inside all the time...but they're also eaten. Heck, I had a duck that was trained to walk on a leash. Best duck I've ever eaten in my entire life, too. Does this make horses any different? |

Horses are classified as LIVESTOCK (h: animals kept or raised for use or pleasure</I> ; especially : farm animals kept for use and profit) hence they are/were considered NOT a pet( a domesticated animal kept for pleasure rather than utility). AS to why I disagree with the new law. When you can have a horse at any house/barn in the city, as dogs and cats are allowed, and pay a fee to register them with the city then is when thy should be able to start to say if you can sell them for human consumption. I am not anti slaughter I am pro conditions and regulation on slaughter bound horses. now that they go to mexico we cant control anything. And after a few reports I would rather it be legal. I raise my own beef, I name them and care for them daily, I feel much better kowing they had a good life and werent treated as the ones that were recently in the news. My cow now comes when called and I know every itchy spot but none the less they are livestock and have a purpose. Does that make me evil/bad? Its no different than any of you who eat meat from a super. Except I know where it came from and I guarantee they had an awesome life. Back to the post I think a cause and effect part of the report might open someones eyes on what really needs to be regulated/controlled. Ifwe start limits and dont supply the source for unwanted horses it will help a lot faster than just shutting a plant down. Selection of who is to be bred would be scrutinized greatly if limits on the amout of foals allowed per breeder/farm/owner would be implemented. Or if they had to pay a fee for having a non spayed/gelded horse/pony. Money/fees speaks wonders for backyard breeders. |

Oh please...the OP looked to me like she was looking for VERIFIED INFORMATION, not a slaughter debate.... There hasn't been a slaughter thread for a very long time that hasn't turned into a debate, which is fine, I enjoy a nice debate, but there's been name-calling on both sides a lot lately.

We'd be doing it now if my mother would let us. I'd definently rather know what I'm eating, though. | |

Ahem! We don't live in Asia, Africa or any of those other countries. We live in America. If those other countries want to eat those types of animals, we're not trying to stop them. We're just trying to stop them from eating OUR horses, dogs and cats. Let them eat their own, and leave ours alone!
