If I'm not mistaken, the picture of the double decker crash was the one in Missouri. I'm pretty sure none of those horses went on too slaughter. They all went to hsmo ranch in Union, Mo. Here are a few link to that story you may be able to use.

http://www.hsus.org/pets/pets_relate...slaughter.html

Here's an article I found on The Horse.com

The Humane Society of Missouri (HSMO) announced this morning (Nov. 2) in a release that it has finalized an agreement that gives the organization ownership of the survivors of the Sept. 27 trailer accident in Franklin County, Mo. In the crash, a double-decker truck carrying 42 slaughter-bound horses overturned on Interstate 44 near Sullivan. Twenty-four horses and a hinny are recovering from the accident--the rest died or were euthanatized.

HSMO's Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union and Northland Insurance Company reached an agreement in which the HSMO takes ownership in exchange for not seeking "recovery of costs associated with the rescue, treatment and care of the animals," said an HSMO release. "To date, these costs exceed $84,000."

The release added, "Twenty-three of the horses are now being cared for at the Humane Society of Missouri's Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union, Missouri. One of the rescued horses is still being treated at an area equine veterinary hospital. This week the hinny returned to an equine veterinary hospital for further treatment of leg wounds."
For more information about the horses and the sponsorship program that HSMO has established for the animals, visit www.hsmo.org or www.longmeadowrescueranch.org.

Good luck on your paper.

This is horse meat! Used in my "STOP SLAUGHTER" video.

Ponies standing in their own dirty, much during a rainy day w/ shelter.

*sigh* Poor horses awaiting death...

Horses awaiting death, this one is laying down...

This picture was actually from a double-decker crash last October 2007. A double-decker carrying many slaughter-bound horses, flipped over! The door was under the truck, so in order to get the horses out, they had to cut a hole in the roof of the double-decker. MANY horses were euthanized from this accident. The horses on that truck were skinny, and were in THE worst condition. I believe the horses that made it out alive were NOT sent to slaughter, but I cannot remember. This just shows how bad transportation is for slaughter-bound horses.

I hope that helps!! I have loads more pics, so if you need any, just PM me. Good luck with your project!!

Why do the report if you can't even look at a dead horse?

I used to be die-hard anti.
Then I started helping at a rescue facility with 30+ equines, and found out that sometimes it's better to get a shot to the head then to starve for a month straight, only to end up at a rescue where one-on-one time is minimal.

Besides that, there's just too many...not enough money for euthanasia. I hate it just as much as the next horse lover, and honestly it KILLS me to know that my own pony was sent to slaughter [I was leasing him, and didn't have a say to where he went]...but it's better to just throw a fit about "spay and geld" and bash every back yard breeder you meet.

Really, it kills me to watch hundreds of thousands of horses go to slaughter every year...but you're fighting a losing battle against the back yard breeders and ignorant buffoons that buy horses as lawn ornaments.

Maybe you could add this bit to your paper? The "pro" side? And more power to you for being Anti. It may sound hypocritical, but I support what y'all do; I just realize that slaughter has to be done to an extent.

I eat meat and used to ride in leather saddles when I was actually riding. Not sure what that has to do with anything.

I just wanted to tell the OP to be careful what pictures you use. You don't wan't to use false pictures. What I mean is don't just pull any picture of a skinny abused horse and say it came from slaughter.

My comment was for the anti-slaughter folks as really there is little difference and if you think about it. I don't understand how one can scream no slaughter to one animal yet eat, wear and utilize another. How is one more valuable than another? Think about WHY slaughter exists and what you contribute to it and why it won't go away.

That is a good point because allot of them were not skinny or abused that were headed for slaughter.....

Horses are being slaughtered because they are " unwanted " because there is a surplus of them and what else are we suppose to do with them?
Cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens are not being slaughtered because the numbers show there are to many unwanted! They are raised and slaughtered for food.
