Horse size/ Rider size

I like riding a horse that is 14.2 and I am 5'8 160 pounds.
Is that an ok match?

I see no problem with that at all. Many Quarter horses that work cattle are between 14-15H and they carry the rider while working cattle. If the horse is the size you like and has no problems when you are riding, I would say enjoy.

All my horses are under 15.2 and I am 6ft and my husband is 6ft 4 and we both weigh more than you so no it is not an issue... our shortest horse is about 13.3.

A lot depends on what you are doing AND the horse. I'm 5'6", 170lbs(+/-), my gelding is 16hh and my stallion is 15.3hh. Hubby is 6' , 240+lbs and his mare is 14.2hh. She is quite capable of taking him anywhere he/they want to go She would never be able to be a Gran Prix jumper with him on her (OHH that's a scary picture - not her so much as him trying - he wouldn't THANKFULLY - shudder)

There are no rules 'set in stone'. In the 1950's there was a pony (Stroller owned by Marion Coates - If I remember correctly) who did fantastic in International Show Jumping.

Enjoy.

Thanks so much. We just do trail riding and light at that. I always feel so big on her compared to the huge horses I rode at a riding school. They were all way over 16 hands it seems.

Glad to know i a should not be carrying her instead LOL

This mare packed my boyfriend adn son both wieghing approx 155lbs at the time though Shawnee National Forest and led the pack for 6 hours and had more to give at the end of the ride. I am bigger then you by quiet a bit and she packs me and shows her hiney the whole way nothing to do with being in pain just that she is a pain in my hiney

my mare I normally ride is 14.1 and has no trouble at all

I know what you mean! Sort of. The lesson horses at a different barn I went to before weren't really tall themselves, but all the horses at the barn now are bigger than Max. He's a shortie, but he's strong. Don't worry about your horse, you're fine unless he's shows any sign of discomfort from the load.

As long as your horse doesn't exhibit any back issues or discomfort and the riding is light you shoudl be OK

I dont think it is bad at all. Now I mean if your jumping extensively, it might be uncomfortable for you as rider, because you are so tall.

USUALLY. The rule is 20% of the horses weight, is what they can carry comfortablly.
