Elbow grease You can aslo try to shine them internally. Nu Image is a great product if you want to spend the money, flax seed, corn oil, the list goes on. Grooming is however the cheapest of them all and it will promote a healthy coat by bringing the horse's natural oils to the surface and removing dead hair on the coat, therefore producing a show ring shine. Some coat colors are harder to get to shine than others for some reason.

We used to use on our show horses, good old fashion elbow greese, actually using your hands. Nothing stimulates and brings out a great shine than your own hands. After they are done being groomed by getting all the dirt and dust off of them, you can start using your hands. Starting at the neck, run your hands over and over and over again, over each part of their body, stroking them to pull out the natural oils in their coat. The other day I was massaging my horse that has EPM, and man did her shine come out. I sometimes forget how easy and natural it is to get them to shine. You can also coat them with the showsheen then use the hand wipe method which also works.

Another feed suppliment is Buckeye Ulitmate Finish. It can be used as a wieght builder but also as a dressing for the top of their grain to add shine. Works good, doesn't put energy into them either like some things.

Question

To TheNaturalWay:
How can your horses be shiney all the time? Horses are dirty they always are adn are always going to be! its impossible unless you constantly stall them(and that only works sometimes) and out there grooming them avery few hours! i just found that statement kinda strange!! wink

I agree with you guys...hard work is important. A good feed program is the most important part, a good rubber curry comb, keeping the sweat rinsed off, and keeping them out of the sun for the most part...but when we show, we use Grand Champion spray and a towell on top of a good bath/groom.

Two things, don't wash them with soap more than every other week (once a week on rare occasions); it removes the natural oils which makes them really shiny! Also, I absolutely swear by showing chaff, my guys never had dapples til someone turned me on to that stuff, it's fab! Finally, groom, groom, groom.
