I also had to clip my mare for a show when she was still terrified of clippers. I used a human razor and it worked great! You can also try one of those "Win by a nose" silent trimmers, but a human razor works just as well.

Are you talking about the kinds I use to shave my legs? I've heard this several times now. Doesn't it shave down to the skin?

Yep, it works great. You just have to be careful not to press too hard, or it will shave to the skin. If you just brush it lightly over the hair it's fine.
