    Horse-Safe Antihistamines

What sort of over-the-counter antihistamines are safe for horses? My mare is allergic to bug bites apparently and my previous coach is now a pharmacist and is going to look into prices for me but we're not sure which are safe for horses. I know Diphenhydramine is safe for dogs and cats, but i'm not sure about horses.

Well I searched through similar threads and found that Diphenhydramine is safe for horses, but for those of you who have administered it, what ration did you use?

My vet told me to use generic benadryl. 5 adult tabs for my 850-900lb Hafie.

Yes my friend talked to her boss and they've reccomended me the generic type.. She said i'll need 32 pills and it's 6 per day.. she's going to buy it for me because she gets a discount, so that'll be nice. In the mean time she's isolated from the other horses (the pony will eat her sheet lol) and has her fly sheet on.

You should be able to get Anti-Hist from your vet. It is very cheap and probably safer than human ones.

AniHist has Guaifenisin in it, which is for coughing, so if that isn't your problem then try HistAll made by the same company: http://www.jeffersequine.com/ssc/pro...&pf_id=0029440. I use this for my guy that breaks out into hives every so often (possible fly bite allergy, or some plant in the pasture - not sure of the cause). Give twice a day for at least 3-5 days when you see a breakout; or you can safely keep them on a maintenence dose. Check the product label (and with your vet) before starting any of these products.
