horse per paddock

i didn't no were to post it so ill just put it hear i was wondering we have been looking for some land for awile now and i was wondering how many acers per horse you need i have heard a few theories and stuff. My plan is to ideally have 2 or more seperate paddocks to use swapping the horse inbetween them allowing the other paddocks to grow. Just one horse. very very bad dry ground and lets say is is resionably flat ground. And if i was to hand feed it through out the year. How much land do you think it needs? thanks in advance.

Down here(Well your in Aussie Land so...Up here lol) you can only legally have 2 horses per acre.....so I could have the max of 10 horses because I have 5 acres. Some one I know had like 9 horses on an acre and she got fined for it. But its a good rule..... I know someone who keeps 4 horses on half an acre....not even.

Depends on the country. A horse in the outback is going to need a lot of acres to scrounge a feed where one is say Maleny could be foundering fat on 1/4 acre.

I have kept 3 horses on 2 acres easyily before. Not much tucker on the ground but plenty went over the fence.

Depends on how much you want to spend on the feed bill and what you can afford for the ground.

yeh im thinking that will be the biggest factor i no down hear its very dry so hand feeding all year will probably be the only way to go so depending on the size and work the horse is getting really rough guess 1/4 of a bale a day

Out tb gets about half a bale a day maitenance, plus his hard feed.

I buy the feed whilst hubby is away, that way he doesnt know how much I spend.

it all depends on your immediate town' ordinances. check with your local agricultural office or town hall, whatever the equivalent would be for you. here in the States, it is different per town, not just state. in my town, i have to have 5 acres to have one horse, and then one acre per added horse. next town over (same state) has no mandates at all.

Wow, RageandGlory a fellow New Englander!!!! Us Yankee chicks need to stick together, LOL. I think you're right about the town to town thing. I live in a small town in NH, and I don't think we have any laws on the size of the land, just whether or not it's zoned as agricultural.

I have 3 acres, maybe 2 1/2 are fenced into 3 paddocks, I have kept as many as 4 horses at one time....I rotated them between the 3 paddocks, but I also fed hay in the summer, now that I only have one horse, I don't need to feed hay in the summer, only winter...Cathy
