    Horse pees ALOT??

My friends horse pees ALOT. He peed 4 times last time we were on a trail for an hour and a half. He peed twice today in the 45 minutes he was getting his feet done. He has peed alot his whole life (5 years) but this is a little more than usual. He will usually go about twice on our trails. She called the vet and the vet wasn't too concerned because they were out last week and did a sheath cleaning. My friend has also been monitoring his feed and temp and such and everything is normal. Now we are in south florida and the temp is over 100 with heat index and all the horses are drinking alot, including as the vet told us her own horses. Is there anything else anyone can think of she should ask her vet about that could cause this?

Call a different vet please. I had a friend with a T-bred that did this and the horse had a urinary stone. My aged mare also did this turned out she had a bladder tumor. Please please get this checked, this can be a VERY painful condition for a horse.

This may be weird but what color is his pee? that can help determine your issues right there. weve had a few horses with kidney failure and their pee gave the indication to take them to a vet. however it could just be that your horse is drinking alot of water and is well hydrated.

Diabetes? All good ideas on other posts too, wouldn't hurt to do clean catch and have tested, also CBC.

Thanks for all the advice! We ended up having the vet out to give my gelding hock injections and check her gelding because he just isn't himself. He eats and goes fine, no fever, he just doesn't seem to have that spark in his eye. They drew blood to start, and will be getting a urine sample by saturday. Does anyone know about how long a blood test takes to come back?

A blood test should come back in a day or two, depends on where it needed to be shipped.

Frequent urination with clear, unconcentrated urine is a symptom of reduced kidney function. The blood test and the urinalysis will both help answer important questions.

How much does he drink ???

My horses pees every hour, on the hour, vast quantities and quite pale. He drinks about 100 litres (that's over 20 gallons a day). Always has done and is from a whole family that does the same thing.

I also spent a lot of time and money on vets trying to figure out what was wrong. Until I measured his water intake. He drinks four or five times as much as my other mare and it has to go somewhere. Oh, and there is nothing wrong with him.

Excess protein (alfalfa is very high in protein) is flushed from the system via the kidneys ie urine. Horses that are fed too much protein will have to pee more to get rid of it and it has quite a strong ammonia smell. It is very expensive urine !

He doesn't get alot of alfalfa, we feed a mix of T&A. He has an auto waterer so we are not sure how much he takes in. Today on the trail he went to pee a few times, he only got out a little and it was really cloudy, like a cloudy lemonade. She is going to call in the morning to check on the blood test and when she can drop off the unrine on saturday. And he is just zapped of energy, at 5 he is usually really playful
