well, I have a pretty good idea why my horse opens his mouth on the bit, but then again im not so sure. i always thought he did it to resist any pressure. i dont think its resulting from a sore mouth because he just got his teeth floated two months ago. he has always done this. How do I get him to stop? At this point i am using a three ringed wonder bit on the second circle. should i switch. please help im a little confused

You seen to have ruled out the teeth but, could it be the bit may have a small hairline break on the bit or maybe some pinching coming from the bit somewhere or maybe the reins are to heavy. Try him in a hackmore and see if this still happen. I recommended this to another person recently and it good for new-be and pro's- Take your horse's head set and reins home and hook the head set on a chair and sit in another chair and practice moving the chair inches and checking the hands positions and work to improve your hand and reins skills. I hope this helps and that you find the problem and correct it,so you can move on and have fun riding. http://spaces.msn.com/members/bwnaturalhorsemanship Bruce. Does he raise his head or just open his mouth? Sounds a bit like this horses initial mouthing was not quite right or he has been continually jagged in the mouth by someone with "not so soft" hands.I would look at remouthing him in a french snaffle and riding him in that and see how it goes. The other thing you could try straight away is simple :drop the bit one hole lower on the cheeck strap and let him pick it up and see if that makes him more comfortable. |

I agree with stockhorse...a french link might help...your horse may have a low pallete or a thick tongue and the bit is hurting his/her mouth.

Using a flash WON'T fix the problem, it'll only cover it up. May I ask why you're using the 3-ring bit? It could be something as simple as the signals overloading him (pressure in the mouth and on the poll) or him having a low pallete/thick tongue.
