Talking The Horse The Killers Didn't Want...Official Update Thread

So, since so many of you have written and commented on Lucky I'm just going to start this thread to keep updating weekly for those of you who are interested in tracking his progress. This week we have:

*Determined that he is probably about 6 years old, judging by his teeth and leaving some room for error (between me and my vet we're stuck somewhere in the 5-7 range lol I leaned toward late five, he said between 6 and seven so we're compromising lol).

*Had a full blood panel pulled and should have the results Monday also had his coggins test drawn

*Been de-wormed, passed icky worms, but other than that given a clean bill of health from the vet

*Probably put on about 30-40 lbs (most likely in mostly water)

*Started being able to trot for more than two or three steps

*Graduated to turn out, he is in our sloping turn out so he has a chance to work the muscles, as per the vet

And...here are the one week before and after photos = )

And now...one week later

What do y'all think so far?

That he does! He's a mare owners dream. He can walk around the arena and go up and sniff at everyone but never sqeals or gets studdy, just acts like a regular old gelding. When the mares are turned out next to him or they're in the arena and walk up to his stall to harass him and flirt he's just like 'Hi! Friends? Will you guys be my friends?!' Never even makes an attempt to flirt, nicker or otherwise entice them lol. I sometimes have to check to make sure that the equipment IS there and I didn't imagine it.

Now don't mistake it and think it's just because he's in such bad shape, he can be PUSHY and we learn our manners every day he just could care less about the hoochies lol. I've never even seen him drop other than to pee and then that's it. I can lead him away from the mares stalls with no halter just as easily and sometimes more easily than the gelings.

Plus he's just such a big sweetheart and has a huge personality He really makes my day.

He's really looking better already. The fact that his face is just so much brighter tells a lot. I think you're going to have a faithful boy there for you.

Yeah, he was too thin. There was literally not an ounce of fat on his body so therefore no meat. Not even muscle, he has wrinkles where muscle used to be. My vet said it's rare he sees cases that bad where the body has literally eaten away the muscle to try to survive, the other thing we're thinking is he was locked in a stall and not even let to walk around because of the amount of atrophy.
