Horse is drooling, and can't be from clover..

Hi guys. So my neighbours gelding that I have been working with has been drooling a lot the passed two or three days. When I went in to his shelter yesterday to get him there was a puddle of drool infront of him. Sometimes it's kinda foamy, but not like rabies or anything, just like bubbly. He continued to drool while he worked. I thought it could possibly be a tooth problem or something in his mouth, so I didn't put his bridle on, so that I did not cause any more problems if it were to be in his mouth. I felt around from the outside to see if I could hit a sore spot, but nothing seemed to bother him. I also pressed on his nose and all that, maybe nasal. Nothing was sore. He was a little off on his hind right leg, but I doubt that has anything to do with it. His paddock is quite small, and doesn't really have any grass anymore. The owners have pretty much run out of hay now, and so he isn't getting much hay either. He ate his favourite treat just fine though. I brought him my left over watermelon, which he absolutely loves. I'm just baffled as to what could be going on. The only answer I get when I google it is that it's from clover. The only clover he ever gets is when I give him a handful when we are done working from the lawn.

Many things could be going on, from neurological to teeth problems. Best bet is to have the vet look at him.

thanks.. just a money issue at this point. I am trying to arrange boarding so that I can take him. The current owners are getting rid of him because they don't have the money. He seemed ready to work once I started lunging, playing a bit, not lethargic, not off balance, just drooling. Hopefully he will become mine soon, and I can save up money to get the vet out.

it sounds like slobbers to me. even though it isn't that much clover every horse is different and he could get it from small amounts while others have to eat more clover to get it. some clover along the way was infected with the fungus that causes it and thats how he got it. there isn't anything you can do to cure it. it will just go away in a couple days by itself. he is still ok to be worked and ridden as usual.

He could be choking. I know an older horse who he has choked once or twice and there is a ton of drool.
