Well, so the farrier said his feet would heal fine with a lot of work and the vet said that his rain rot would go away with salve and a little bandaging (sounded weird, but some are like cuts into the skin almost) so they will not get infected. So his prognosis looks good. The farrier sedated him to look at his teeth since he is so head shy and said someone had beaten hm in the head so much his nose was slightly indented in his mouth (if you don't get what I mean, sorry, it is hard to explain), well anyway other than that his took looked fine and the vet floated them I think (I don't quite remember, I wasn't there when his teeth were done, I had to go pick up my daughters from school) Well, we will have to see how he does tonight. (he spent the night at my neighbor's barn because I didn't have a trailer and he was exhausted, so we stopped at my neighbors barn and they let me keep him in a stall for the night, I slept next to his stall). Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could keep the flies off him (he has practically no tail or mane!) and/or his head (he is really head shy), is there like a fly spray for a horse's face or something like that because a mask is out of the question for right now? thanks for the support and comments, xoxoxo hannah

I use regular bug spray on my horses face, but I put it in my hand and then wipe it onto their head. Also, you can tie binder twine into what tail he has left and it will act as a fake tail LOL might look kinda funny, but it works. This story sounds like fate

There are roll ons for fly spray too. There is one called War Paint that works really good. But he will look like a football player when he has it on. :-)) You can also buy the individual wipes or just do like Amber does. You can put it on a cloth and rub it on. Just be careful around the eyes! I am proud to be a HGS member when I hear stories like yours. Good luck!

And I can vouch for the bailer twine thing working. I do it in the summer when I want to put my mare's tail up, but want her to have her swatters. Actually, someone on HGS gave me the idea...... Can't remember who now!

Thanks so much guys, I will definitely try the tail thing I am still stuck on the face thing though. He has absolutely zero trust in humans as you can imagine considering what people have done to him. The vet guessed his age to be about 17 and guessed he was a Draft x TB as I had originally though. When the vet had him sedated they washed his face off because you can;t get within 2 feet of his face before he bolts. He doesn't kink or bite just runs away. My daughters are thrilled to have a new horse. I was originally going to rescue the other horse because our old pony just died and my daughters needed something to work on. Of course after quite a bit of training. (They are 11 and almost 13, but both are very experienced and great with horses) Our vet said if we could get him to trust us and re-break him slowly and gently (apparently he was beaten when he wouldn't let them put the saddle on or didn't behave) he had pretty good conformation. So mostly good news, but it will be a long road. Again, I need maybe some type of thing to put in the stall or pasture, but not on his head (can't get near it at all right now) for those dang flys! thanks loads for the support and help, xoxoxo hannah
