Horse follows?

Whenever Ive been riding my horse and I dismount he follows me EVERYWHERE. Even if we are in the grass, he doesnt eat it ...he follows. Is this good?

I would say that its great! To me it means that your horse trusts you and wants to be with you.

There was a post this week or at the end of last week that the person said that she taught her horse to eat the grass by touching her horses sholder and told it "eat".

If your worried about your horse doing its own thing while your still around maybe you should take off the bridle after your done riding and teach her the "eat" thing. I think it is a great idea and have started it with my yearling to get ready for the trails.

I think the thread had something to do with a horse munching while trail riding and suggestions on how to stop it.

when your horse voluntarily follows you, it is a sign for trust. if you dont like it, tell the horse to stay or whoa. if the horse follows you, wave your hands and as soon as he stands, say good boy and praise him. eventually he will get the point that you dont want him to come with you. then when he gets this figured out, you can teach him to come to you when you call such as a whistle or a kissing noise. my horses know this, and it is nice because they ground tie and they come to me...really nice when they come to you when you call for when you go to catch them from out in the pasture...especially cause i dont have a barn to stall mine in.

Our horse likes to follow us around as well. He will even try to "help" out if I am doing some chores. He follows me like a little puppy. I find it adorable, and think it is a sign of trust as well as playfulness.

It is great, I think. MY horse does it too. I heard that is a respect thing. When are horse respects and trusts you, he'll follow you.

It is always a good thing when a horse would prefer to be with us - makes training a whole lot easier

THAT's for sure!

I have a few stalkers too. Miracle and Calypso. Calypso is completely spoiled by his own mama, yet he takes to following ME everywhere.. not her .. I dont mind it at all. It lets me know that they trust me and see me as their leader. It doesn't always make training easier, but it does help and come in handy quite often. Especially when working on ground manners... Calypso is still quite green and an OTTB at the age of 6.. can be quite high strung..and we're working on getting him desensitized to many things.. Having his complete trust has helped me quite a bit.

Yes, its a good thing and horses will do this when the saddle is on but when the saddle is off they may follow and then decide to do something else like roll or eat grass.
It is always good to take a horse for a walk and get them to do small manuvers like stopping and backing up and moving side to side with you and this will aid in this behavior.
Horses do love to hang out with us when we are go leaders, friends.
Enjoy your partner.
