horse flipping? (you know, like house flipping)

I have been thinking....I would really like to do with another horse the kind of thing I did with cocoa. Get a cheap, unbroke/untrained/unruly animal and fix them up for resale within a years time or less. It cost me around $3-400 to house cocoa when it was all said and done. Not to mention she helped pay for her stay thru work...in the end I made nearly a 50% profit. What do you think of horse flipping ventures?~Brit

I've done it with a few horses, but it is not always surefire that you will make money. At times I have made money others I've lost. The horse market it low right now. I would say now would be the time to buy, spring or early early fall the time to sell. Most of it depends on your region though.

those are the apropriate buy sell times here. Right now, it's so horrible, that I could make a killing come spring if only I had the gal and pasture. lol!! And I wouldn't need to do anything but feed the darned animals! I want to try it again...but only if I find the 'perfect' prospect. I won't rush into anything or go against a gut feeling. God willing, I'd love to do this over and over...but one horse at a time. lol. I understand I could lose money...but who ever has money when they own horses? At least, if nothing else, I will gain experience points. lol~Brit

If you have the experience, the facilities, the time and the money then it can be fine.

I wouldn't do it if I was boarding though... that could get expensive. I plan to do this when I get out of college but I keep my horses at home for free so its easier to make a bigger profit.

Edited sorry thought you said 3000 lol

And I thought you were looking for a barrel horse and only had like $600 to spend?

I can't sell a Zone finalist who's pushbutton ($35,000), or a quiet ride-and-drive kid safe pony ($3,000) right now, and both are VERY reasonably if not under priced for this area and their atributes. Both ends of the market are down, even for very nice horses. Good luck!

You made a 50% profit even after the $3000 you spent housing an dfeeding her? How much did you buy her for and how much did you sell her for?

think she said 3 - 400 not 3- 4000 lol

With that attitude then you have nothing to lose. I think that is the main thing to keep in mind when "flipping" a horse.

I've done it in the past. but these days the horse market is down down DOWN, so I won't even consider it until prices rise.

hey thanks! I AM looking for a barrel prospect, which I will keep forever and always (yeah right)...but until then I'd like to build my budget a little...if I can.

If I had $3-4000 I'd soooo not bother. I'd be training my barrel horse. lol!!!!!

I appreciate the thoughts and encouragement. I love training horses, especially ones who are a little bit of trouble (not completely gone, mind you) that just need proper care and handling to come around.

If I had connections I'd do the whole OTTB thing. But I don't.

I realize the market is down BAD all over right now. Hence the whole 'buying' thing I've got going on here. mwahahahahaha. You guys are great. thanks!~brittany

Well often OTTB's are very.. um gone lol. They need someone experienced with Tbs and hot horses because all they know is run run run.
