horse cut up in barbed wire...

Hi Just for starters i already called my vet about this...this morning my mom's 5 year old qg gelding got caught up in barbed wire. We didn't notice the wounds on his back legs until this afternoon, when i returned home from school. As this morning it was dark outside.

What the wound is, just a skin peeled wound...about 2-3 inches wide and lond, with a pink brown and black tone to it.

Anyways my vet reccomended just keeping it clean...i am useing (idodine& warm water) and scrubbing it...would you reccomend better scrub?

She also said that it is my option to use something to make the hair grow back(i would like if maybe somebody can give me an idea of what exactly to look for)

Should i wrap it, or leave it out in the air(has a nice position to wrap it. pretty much where polo wraps would go.

What other healing aids shoul i use?

For a skin scrape like that, I would leave it open, and clean it with iodine like you are already. Once you see a scab start to form, stop the scrubbing. If you want, put some nitrofurazone or Corona on the scrape and stop the scrubbing. Nitro helps a lot with scarring.

This stuff called Cut-Heal works excellent! It reduces scars and heals really fast.It comes in liquid with a dabber so u can put it on the wound easy.It only costs 6 bucks and u dont have to use anything else,it says to use only that and dont wrap it.I have used it a LOT and so far no scars have been left.

I tried cut-heal when I first got my horses. Mine was some gobby stuff tho, not like gingersnaps described. Mine stunk...I threw it out. Maybe the liquid works better, but definitely dont bother with the pasty, gob version of the stuff.

Um....that BlueKote and RedKote stuff are disasterous for wounds!! They cause proud flesh. Instead wash and pat the wound dry daily with warm water. Apply a softening ointment. We always use Preperation H and it works miracles. The hair and skin will grow back without a trace of the accident.

Keep washing it with iodine or bedatdine works well also. If you want to keep it from scaring use some neosporin and then some corona on top of that. Keep it moist with the corona and neosporin until the scabs are gone and skin has grown over the wound. This will keep it from scaring and promote hair regrowth.

My 4 year old TB had a bad slice on his butt and this worked great! His skin has grown back and the hair is starting to grow back, and it has only been two weeks.

I agree with Jumper, the Blue/RedKote (it just makes a mess!!) just keep it clean and make sure you don't get any proud flesh. I always use baby oil, I find the hair grows back in faster!
