Horse Auctions

Hi Ya'll

I am interested in going to a horse auction to scope out possible rescue prospects. Is this how people usually find rescue horses, through auctions? Anyone know of a place in central california that has a lot of horses needing to be recued?

Thanks!
K

I don't know about in CA but I know of a horse rescue group in PA that will accompany a potential rescuer to the New Holland Auction. Even if you are very horse savvy, you should still ask someone familiar with the local auction to go with you. Otherwise you could end up bidding against another rescuer instead of a kill buyer. They usually know what to look for too, and can sometimes help you find a good horse to rescue.

I just googled it, and I'm not sure where you're located in CA but here's a list of some auctions: http://www.stable.com/index.cfm?fuse...&type=Auctions

Good luck!

I'm also interested in horse rescue. What about Iowa though....any idea where to look here?
Good tip mahorsie.....I'd want to work with those who were there to help, not complicate things. =)

Talk to farriers/vet/feed stores, and your animal shelters. Go to Petfinder.com, there are horses on there needing rescue. There are always posts on here about someone who knows of a rescue. Check with your law enforcement/ag inspector for state, as they many times know of situations, but may not have person or place to put horses if they take them, so more or less monitor.
Also check by letting people know you would be interested in rescuing. But if you have horses already, be sure you have isolation area, so others don't get sick, and be prepared to be overwhelmed, as if you get one, the others will fall out of sky.

Not sure if this is something you'd be interested in, but you could always contact a rescue like meljean suggested and see if they need foster homes. That way you can help the horse out by providing care while also helping out the rescue by making room for another horse to save. There's tons of options for helping rescue horses.

Ron's Barn... DeWitt, Iowa. 2nd and 4th Fri. In November it changes to Sat. They have a website. There's one in Maquoketa,Iowa once a month but I don't know the dates. Kolona, Iowa has a horse auction the first Monday every month. It starts around 8 am. If you do a search on the internet, there are several others.

We have picked up a few rescues at auction but most people think it is the very thin horses that have to be rescued. The opposite is usually true. Most killer buyer don't want the very emaciated horses. At the sales in our area we usually have a killer buyer that will set in the price. Usually if anyone bid then the horse is safe. If not it may be doomed. The horse that are most often going to slaughter, atleast in our area, are the fat healthy horses that are either not broke, lame, or green broke and not as flashy as the others. The local sale this month the killer prices were down some. I saw several go for $40 or less that usually would go for close to $100. I over heard the buyer telling someone that there was a large group(hundreds) of horses up north that were shipped down to Mexico and that flooded the market but they should be back up this next month. The best thing to do is figure out who your killer buyer is(usually in the semi truck) and watch what he is buying. You can get a pretty good idea of what type of horse you need to be looking for. Remember, you can't save them all. Since we are limited to space, we try to get the ones that are ridable and sound. I hate to see the others slip through but atleast we can help the usuable horses to find a good home and stay alive. Good luck!
