    Hormones for geldings.

My 9 year old gelding thinks he still has the "goods". He mounts and does all the actions and it's beginning to really bother me. If he didn't go after the other gelding and take fences down, I'd let him do whatever. But seeing as this is the case, I want to try to completely take his pride away.

I bought him when he was 4 and I assume he was proud cut. Are there any hormones I can give him? I heard progesterone can be given. I would rather not do tests, but if I must for some reason, I suppose it might be worth it to stop this studly behavior.

    Thanks

You can have a test done - there always a test - it was $45. My guy is just a bully. I keep looking for a mare that will take him on.....

He could be a crypterchid, I would get his hormone levels tested for sure!

If he is a crypt, he could be more prone to health problems unless the other testicle get removed.

I almost bought crypt a couple of years ago, Lucky for me he was being gelded before I took him. The vet took one off and then couldn't find the other one! Surgery here runs between $600-$1000 to get the missing one.
There are still vets out there that will take one "dropped" testicle off even though the other is still up in their gut.

This was my first thought, too

Have your vet check his homone levels

Is he turned out by himself? What does he mount? Geldings? Mares? Both

THe only reason I ask is b/c if he is cryptorchid and can impregnate a mare....

Mares Magic good for geldings also

I have a friend who uses mares magic for her gelding, he would be tied near a mare in heat while trail riding, someone told my friend she used it on her gelding, and she said it helped, she had to use it for awhile can not remember how long but she now uses every trail riding season.

    Good luck

Well I've owned him for 5 years and our mares aren't pregnant. So I don't think he's a crypt. Would I be able to feel a testicle or is it up in his body? I've poked and prodded and stuff and nothing feels like a testicle.

He only mounts mares. He chases geldings away. He is pastured with all our horses (3 mares and another gelding), but he's been moved to the riding stable I work at so now he'll be in a pasture with other dominant males and mares and the sort. It should be interesting to see where he ends up on the totem pole.
