hooves

What are some good topical ointments or something that is realatively inexpensive and that makes hooves stronger, hold shoes better, less likely to crack, etc? Supplement ideas are welcome as well (though they tend to be on the expensive side...)

Thanks!

there are supplements you can feed them, one called Horseshoers secret. It works great. Also pine tar, you can get that at your local tsc.

I agree, hoof flex,is real good, but the old timers use to use, motor oil, it still works good, and usually, you have it around the garage, won't hurt your horse. Pine Tar,is another one,but there is all sorts of supplements, you can get at Tsc.

For topical treatments I use Pine Tar.
A friend of mine swears by it and suggested I give it a try. I keep my horses barefoot and even trail ride that way so it's very important that their hooves are in good shape. And I have no complaints about the pine tar! It works very well for keeping the hoof moisturized. I only put it around the corrnet band and heels and you only need to apply it every 3 days or so (its sticky stuff and stays on really well).
Don't put it on if you are going to a show - as I said, it's sticky so it picks up bits of dirt and it's very hard to remove if it isn't worn off some.

A good trim and a high quality diet.

Seriously, if you have those 2 things, you don't need hoof-specific supplements. If either one is lacking, the feet will have problems.

And, sometimes putting topical treatments on the hooves can actually do them more harm than good.

IN addition to a good trim and quality diet, HYDRATION! I dont like the use of oils and hoof products, they normally end up drying the hoof out.

I found with my TB's feet we had a hard time keeping shoes during certain times of the year, so I would put some "tuff stuff" over the nail holes right after the shoeing and that seemed to help. I did this at the recommendation of my shoer, that is the only thing we will put on a hoof and only around the nail holes.
