So today when I was riding Berry he was very slow and not wanting to go forward, I didn't think anything of it. On the grass he was walking fine, the gravel he was slightly, hmmm, not off but just more cautious, sensitive, you know? He was fine on pavement the first time, then the second time he stumbled and nearly fell two steps in a row and I just thought it was because he had put his head down to try and grab some grass and wasn't paying attention. After this though he felt off and I heard this loud clicking/smacking sound. So I hopped off and looked at his rear right leg and hoof (I had picked out all of his hooves before riding very quickly and they seemed fine) I couldn't see anything wrong with his foot but I knew something was hurting him so I walked him back to the barn. I cleaned out his hoof again and it looked kind of odd. He was trimmed on Thursday of last week and his feet are already chipping and cracking from walking on dirt and just a little pavement (twice). His rear right looked weird to me and I have no idea what is wrong with it. I soaked it in epsom salts for a while and looked at it again. The area where the arrow is pointing was kind of dipped in and scuffed up and soft. Its on both sides of the hoof in that area. It almost seems like wall separation to me, but I have no experience with this type of thing, so I don't know. I also thought maybe an abscess, but again, no experience. His toe looked kind of different to me too, I just don't know how to describe it. It was too dark to get decent pictures, so tomorow I will get some. But any ideas of what this could be or what I can do? Thanks.

I cannot really see anything.... but the area you are pointing to is where a horse will usually develop "corns". Perhaps Rick or Sue or JB will have better insight for you.

| Senior Member | Thanks, and that isn't his hoof, just a pic from the internet to demonstrate the area I'm talking about.
