Post Hoof Inmjury?.?.?.?

I have a 4 y/o mare who has come up with an injury to her front hoof. There is a 3" cut in the coronette band and she acts slightly stiff when being worked to the left. What is strange about this cut is that it is a). growing, and b). appears to almost be eating into her hoof.
Somebody has proposed that it's a hoof absess that came up through the hoof and burst at the top, but would it start to eat away at her hoof like it seems to be doing?

Does anybody have any ideas on what this could possibably be and how to her her on teh road to recovery?

-we are soaking her hoof 2 X a day in epsom salt, and have been cleaning the wound.

firstly - stop working her,
secondly - call the vet, it sounds like it may need antibiotics and certainly needs veterinary attention.

Oh yes she has stopped being worked, plus it's winter so she isn't worke often anyway. She dosn't seem to be in tremendous amount of pain (seeing how she spend about 10 minutes chasing our mini around).

I do have some penacillin (sp?) that I can give her, but that is only for internal infections. If it is an absess wouldn't I need amoxicillin (sp?)?

* I forgot to add I have done quite a bit of reasearch and since she went from being shod to 'going barefoot' for the winter an absess is most likely, and the easist way for it to burst is through the top.

* if it dosn't start to drain as an absess should
I think we will have corrective trimming done. Strangely most sources said a vet is not needed, a farrier can help, but if not I suppose I will have to call my uncle (he's a vet). And see is he can ship us out some medicine.

Your uncle wont be able to tell what is actually wrong with your horse without seeing her. Never give antibiotics without a veterinary consultation. While an abcess is likely there are any number of other things it could be and your horse needs to be SEEN by a vet.

The epsom salt soaks are a great idea, keep doing that. I have not heard of that before, looks like it is eating the hoof? That would alarm me, I would have a vet look at it for sure, better safe then sorry.

Keep us updated. Thanks and good luck!

If it is a hoof abscess, it would have been festering in the hoof for a wee while and that would have either made your horse short on her painful foot or badly lame. Did you notice anything before the injury to the coronary band?

A Vet will be able to help you just as much, if not more than a farrier.

If you want to see what an abscess looks like coming out through the coronary band (for you to compare), feel free to email me (DrCallaghan@langford-equine-clinic.co.uk)... it isn't pretty!

I have many doubts about this being an abscess but as I have not seen the coronary band injury, I can't really say.

Either way, hope you get it sorted soon.
