Question Homogenious Blue-roan?

Hi. I currently want to breed my black, Tennessee Walking Horse Mare. And i was wondering, is there such thing as a homogenious blue roan, Tennessee Walking Horse stallion? I have saw blue roans, but none homogenious. Is there such a thing? If there is, could you post a picture of one, or the website of one?

Thanks, Brianna

You likely won't find one claiming to be that. There is no test for roan and thus no proof that any given stallion is homozygous. I personally have not seen a blue roan TWH that even has a really high percentage of roan foals, but I'm not heavily into the TWH market. Sorry. Maybe someone else will know.

Everything concerning color genetics is changing at a fast clip so I don't know if this is one of those things that no longer holds true. In the past, everything I read about roan said there were no homozygous roan horses because it was lethal. The double-gened babies would never be born, with the fetuses being absorbed or aborted by the mare. I'd be very interested in hearing from someone more up-to-date on the subject.

Well I hope everyone realizes that there is a whole discussion about this same topic going on on the horse breeders page. So many articles and pages of information are posted there in that topic too.

with this stallion it says you have a 67% chance on getting a blue roan out of your black mare

There's only a 50% chance of the foal being roan to begin with, so there can't be more than a 50% chance of having any color Roan.

In fact, if it's a true blue roan (black with roan) bred to a true black, then you choices are as follows:

If either is homozygous black:
50% black
50% black roan

If neither are homozygous black:
25% black
25% black roan
25% chestnut
25% chestnut roan

Oh, and I just checked the site - it says he's homozygous black, so there are 2 options when bred to a black mare - 50% black, 50% black roan.

The 67% you quoted is the % of black roans out of black mares. His 33 foals (total) are not statistically significant enough to get numbers closer to 50% Roans, and the 15 black mares for sure are not significant enough. It's pretty close though, relatively speaking, so it's likely that in another 5-10 black mares, he'll be pretty close to 50/50 black and black roan.
