Hey everyone, haven't posted lately...but I have a science question! In the chemical equation: 2HO(AlC) Would the coefficient of 2 be distributed throughout the Hydrogen (H), Oxygen (O), Aluminum (Al), and Carbon (C), or would it just be distributed throughout the Hydrogen and Oxygen? So...I guess the basic question is...does the coefficient distribute throughout the paranthesis, as well? Thanks in advance HGS!! Sarah

im not a chemist at all. im more towards the biology department ;0) but my gut reaction is that the 2 only deals with the hydrogen and oxygen....;.

No...if AlC is part of the compound (and therefore has a subscript which is why it is in parenthesis) it is two of HO(AlC) If it was just two H or two O it would be H2O(AlCO) or HO2(AlC) . The first is two hydrogen and the second two oxygen. Big numbers are for the entire compound...little numbers each individual molecule/ion or element.

Is it like 2HO(AlC)2 + HCl...or something like that? The big two applies to the compound HO(AlC)

I'm a chemistry minor and from what I know the 2 goes with everything. So there are 2 HO(AlC) Molecules. Think about how you use coefficients to balance a chemical equation. Now if it was HO(AlC)2<--little two that would mean that there are 2 AlC components and only one HO. Giving 2HO(AlC)2, 2 HO components and 4 AlC components. Hope this makes any sense. PM me if you need more help.
