Holsteiner roaning?

I am buying this holsteiner named Roxy (I have another thread about her). She has some white hairs around her flanks. Does this mean she is roaning? Her owner says that they have been there since she was 3 months old and have never spread.

it is probably the rabacino gene at work, it causes a light frosty roaning at the flanks normally, but can also be seen on the belly, etc. Does she have white hairs in the base of her tail?

I agree, sounds like it could be rabicano. If she has white hairs at her tail base, then I'd definately think it was rabicano.

Ok, I'm not sure if she has white hairs at the tail base, I'll take more pix tomorrow, and check that out.

That "roaning" is most probably just one of the numerous variations of the sabino gene. The "roans" that Alla Czar sired are just different expressions of the sabino gene.

Although rabicano is also a possibility, sabino is alot more probable. Just get a picture of the tail head - that will clear this all up.

Well, there may be sparse whitening at the tailhead if it's sabino, while it will be more horizontal stripes if it's rabicano.

Here's some links to both the sabino and rabicano colours.

Sabino--Equine Color - Horse & Pony Color Genetics Information

Rabicano--Equine Color - Horse & Pony Color Genetics Information

You could compare your mare's colour to the patterns above and likely determine which it is.
